Last updated 20 October 2026. RuleMover is unofficial and not affiliated with Xero.
RuleMover is a browser extension (Chrome and Edge) that copies bank rules between Xero organisations through Xero’s visible screens. The short version: the extension sends nothing anywhere. What it needs to do its job stays in your browser until you remove it.
The extension
- It makes no network requests of its own. It has no server, no account system, no analytics and no tracking.
- It runs only on go.xero.com, in your own logged-in browser session. It reads what Xero’s screens show and fills in Xero’s own forms, the way you would by hand.
- It does not read your Xero credentials, and it does not use remote code.
What the extension keeps in your browser
RuleMover keeps the following in your browser’s extension storage, on your computer. RuleMover (the operator) never receives any of it.
- The captured rules: for each rule you chose to copy, its name, type, conditions, contact, line items (description, account, tax rate, tracking, amount or percentage), transfer account, reference setting and the bank account it runs on; plus the source organisation’s name, short code and Xero edition. The list of rule names shown for you to choose from is kept until you capture or cancel.
- What it read from the organisation you paste into: that organisation’s name, short code and Xero edition, account codes and names, tax rate names, tracking categories and options, bank account names, the content of existing rules that share a name with a captured rule (to avoid duplicates), the ids of the other existing rules, and, for each contact named in the captured rules, whether it exists there and its name as shown. While that read runs, a checkpoint of it is kept so a reload can resume.
- Status messages: the last error or notice shown in the panel, which can include an organisation or rule name.
- The copy journal: the progress of a copy and its results (saved, saved but to check, skipped or failed, with the reason), so a run can resume after a reload.
- A random identifier for the current browser session, used only to tell browser tabs apart. The browser deletes it when it closes.
To remove it: choose Forget captured data in the RuleMover panel on go.xero.com. That deletes the captured rules, what was read from the target organisation, the checkpoint, the copy journal and the rule list. Removing the extension from your browser deletes all of it too. Capturing again replaces the previous capture.
Export to spreadsheet saves a CSV file of your captured rules to your computer. RuleMover doesn’t send it anywhere. The file stays on your computer until you delete it; Forget captured data and removing the extension don’t delete it. Import spreadsheet reads the CSV file you choose in your browser. RuleMover doesn’t send it anywhere. Imported rules are kept in your browser, like captured ones, until you click Forget captured data.
