Xero disposes of one asset at a time
Bulk disposal has been on Xero’s ideas forum since 2015, with 475 votes. People describe disposing of 100 to 250 assets one by one after a business sale, and in one case about 1,500 across three venues. In November 2025 Xero said it isn’t planned.

How it works
- Pick the assetsOpen Fixed assets in Xero. RuleMover lists the registered assets; tick the ones to dispose, or select them all.
- Set the details onceDisposal date, sale price (0 for a write-off), the sale proceeds account, the gain or loss account and the depreciation for the year. The preview shows each asset’s book value and the gain or loss before anything is posted.
- DisposeRuleMover fills in Xero’s own dispose form for each asset, at a steady pace, inside your logged-in browser. You get a list of what was disposed, and any asset Xero refused, with Xero’s reason.
- Undo if neededWrong date or account? Undo the whole batch: RuleMover uses Xero’s “Undo disposal” on each asset, which restores it and reverses the journals.

Questions
- Is this made by Xero?
- No. RuleMover is an independent tool. Xero’s API can’t dispose of assets, so it works through Xero’s normal Fixed assets screens, the same way you would by hand.
- Which Xero version does it work with?
- Xero’s new Fixed assets screens, which Xero is moving everyone to. It’s built and tested on Xero Australia. Using Xero in New Zealand, the UK or the US? Email us before you buy and we’ll tell you honestly.
- Where does my data go?
- Nowhere. The extension runs in your browser while you’re logged in to Xero, and nothing is sent to a RuleMover server.
- What if something goes wrong halfway?
- Each asset is disposed separately, so a failure stops at that asset and the list shows where. You can resume, or undo the assets already disposed.
- What if Xero adds bulk disposal itself?
- Then you probably won’t need this, and you can ask for a refund of any unused months.
